FARS

The province of Fars situated in the Southeast of Iran is as beautiful as Iran herself where the beauty of nature in its myriads of forms does a wonder. As an abundant and a fertile land, this province is considered as one of the significant agricultural areas in Iran.
The province of Fars was originally the land of ancient Iran. The Achemenid Dynasty had based their capital in Persepolis which is now in the close vicinity of Shiraz.
One of the characteristics of this territory was that it embraced myriads of tribes. Considering the vastness of this province itself, the migration of these tribes was like leaving one border for another although within the same province.
Ghashghai, Khamseh and Lor tribes are amongst the ones to be mentioned as major tribes although there are smaller tribes too which live in the same province. One of the characteristics of a tribal life is the creation of handcrafts but the creation of hand-knotted rugs as an art/craft has occupied the highest status. The Ghashghai and Khamseh creations have gained them worldwide recognition and name.
Miri's creations are being processed among three different groups in Fars Province:
Ghashghai tribes, Khamseh tribes and Abadeh.

1-Ghashghai
They are the most important and densely populated tribes of Iran and speak Turkish. They have created the most valuable and precious handicrafts of all kinds but when it comes to knotting, they truly let their imaginations go beyond any standard. The diversity of techniques, color combinations and designs in these tribe are too beautiful to let any eyes pass by indifferently. Connoisseurs can easily distinguish and name the originality of the rugs.

2-Khamseh
Khamseh is a reference to the 5 tribes in the Fars province, three of which speak Turkish, one tribe speaks Farsi, and the Arab tribe speaks Arabic.
The knotted art/works of Arab tribe is called Arab-baff, meaning "knotted by Arabs". In spite of carrying Arabic names, they are from Persian origin.

3-Abadeh
Abadeh is located between Shiraz and Isfahan at an altitude of 2000m. This is a city where the Ghashghai migratory tribes pass through during their migrations, therefore, "migration" has played a great role in their lives. It will be a right assessment to claim that the Ghashghai tribes have also been culturally influenced by these encounters which ultimately resulted in their engagement in knotting. But what is interesting is that those tribes have successfully developed and created their own versions and characteristics of vertical looms and cotton foundation.
